I did hear of this company which is not using version controling, we all did hear of this one company. But did you ever hear the name of the company? I didn't! There must be a company, not using version control to develop their software, but nobody tells you the name of the company. I even heard stories of companies that develop software for libraries for which they did lost the source code.

After quite some time hearing these stories and never hear a name, I thought these are just fairy tales. Fairy tales! Like the ones parents tell their kids to scare them. Well nobody can be that stupid! Nobody is developing software without version controlling (at least not for projects in teams and not for projects that run longer than a week, but even then it would be a good idea). No, that would just be stupid! Software development without version controlling is like bungee jumping without ropes.

But last week, not thinking about these stories anymore - I found it! I found the company not using a version controlling system, this company does really exist. And off course I'm not gone tell you the name of the company. I don't want to blame them (in public). But trust me this company does exist! They save their files on the disk and try to not work on the same files as there coworkers do.

But too scare you not too much: They will switch to a version control system soon. So the company using no version controlling is soon history. If you really should find a other one (or, behave, work for one) tell them to install a revision control software. Install one as soon as possible not matter which one (as long as it is not source shredder, ähmm safe). Git, SVN, CVS - they are all fine! As long as you use one.

You might probably not believe what I say. But please believe Bertrand Delacretaz, he's a director of the Apache Software Foundation (this guys manufacture the internet), and in his talk he does also tell you the next three step after having a version control system. This is the list from the development server I use at work (called pluto, one of the seldome one that is not named by a model or actress). The history file is only 500 entrance. global_search is a company specific search tool.

It seam that I used wget for debugging lately quite often. Tools in the list I use also regularly (and are usfull too) are among others: mysqldumpslow, scp and pmap.

The Google guys just organize there second Open Source Jam in there Zürich offices. The event take place on the Thursday, February 28, 2008 in there new offices. Everyone is invited to join in. You have just to file the online form. You can get more Information about the Open Source Jam at the site of the Open Source Jam Zürich Google Groupe.

(I'm not there this time. I will enjoy my holidays far away from Zürich.)

Am 12. und 13. März findet in Bern erneut die Openexpo statt. Die eine Menge interessante Einblicke in die Schweizer Open Source Szene bieten wird. Mit dem Kernel Entwickler Alan Cox  konnte diesemal ein hochkarätiger Keynote-Speaker gewonnen werden. An zahlreichen Vorträgen und Ständen hat jedermann die Möglichkeit sich selber ins Bild zu setzen. Für Besucher die sich ängstigen von den anwesenden Nerds mit Fachchinesisch zu getextet zu werden, werden täglich Jungle Tours durch das Messegelände angeboten.

Peter Zaitsev, of MySQL Performance Blog fame, is at the end of this week in our offices in Adliswil. He will teach us how we can tweak our MySQL cluster and answer all our questions about MySQL.

Eigentlich bin der Meinung das es nur eine Social-Network-Platform braucht. Ich bin mit xing ziemlich zufrieden und will meine Daten nicht an 100 Orten erfassen.

Ohloh ist jedoch eine geniale Idee. Ohloh erfasst Open Source Projekte und deren Entwickler. Aufgrund der Version Controlling Log's werden die Projekte analysiert und daraus interessante Daten, wie die Entwicklung der Codebassis und die benützten Programmiersprachen, aggregiert. Open Source Entwickler können ihr Profil ebenfalls erfassen und ihre Erfahrung wird automatisch aus ihren Commits berechnet, ausserdem können die Entwickler sich gegenseitig bewerten  ("Kudos"  geben).

Mich braucht man auf Ohloh jedoch noch nicht zu suchen. Obwohl ein paar Zeilen Code des aktuellen Eclipse CDT Release aus meiner Feder stammen und ich bei anderen Projekten ab und zu Bugfixes beigesteuert habe ich bis jetzt noch nie direkt commited. Aber was ja noch nicht ist kann ja noch werden.

LOTS gibts leider nicht mehr. Für den September ist aber nun mit der OpenExpo eine neue Messe angekündigt, die mit einem ähnlichen Konzept (und einem ehmaligen Organisator des LOTS) in die Bresche springt.

Ich freue mich bereits darauf und hoffe das viele Open Source Projekt und Interessierte partizipieren werden und natürlich auch genügend Sponsoren gefunden werden.

• Am 12. Juni findet an der HSR für Studenten und Alumnis in eher kleinerem Rahmen das erste FOSS Treffen statt. Die Themenliste scheint relativ flexibel zu sein und ich hoffe das wir uns nicht allzu lange mit technischen Dingen aufhalten und den Schwerpunkt auf das Open-Source-Engagement der HSR und den offenen Zugang zu Wissen setzen können.
• Am 13. Juni, WM bedingt, bereits um 17 Uhr findet dann der Webtuesday statt. Für einen Präsentation zu "Ruby on Rails" von Patrice und anschliessendes Schweiz-gegen-Frankreich-Schauen sind wir bei eurospider (map) zu Gast. Für HSR-ler die das Spiel ohne "Ruby on Rails" geniessen wollen gibt es als Alternative zum Webtuesday eine WM-Bar (organisiert vom VSHSR Hockey, welche Ironie).
• Am Freitag 16.6. um 12:15 zeigt Professor Heinz Domeisen an der HSR seine drei Eurobot-Teams beim "Fun Golf". Mit dabei auch Schweizermeister Pure-M.
• Am 17. Juni findet dann der erste Wikipedia Tag statt. Unter anderem mit einem Vortrag von Prof. Bertrand "Eiffel" Meyer, der im schweizer Wikipedia-Ableger bereits einmal für Tod erklährt wurde.

Ich bin gar nicht dazu gekommen zu schreiben das mein erster Patch für ein Open Source Projekt angenommen wurde. Auch wenn es sich dabei nur um ein einziges Break handelt bin ich sehr stolz. Die weiteren Patches werden ja bald folgen.

Das Open Source Car Projekt ist zurück. Bereits vor 6 Jahren habe ich das Projekt mit grossem Intresse verfolgt. OScar war wohl einer der ersten Versuche Open Source auf matrielle Güter zu übertragen. Nach dem das Projekt im Jahr 2000 irgendwie hängen blieb wird es nun neu gestartet. Solche Projekte sind meiner Meinung nach für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung unserer Weltgemeinschaft unbedingt notwendig.
